LAOS: Sabai Dee Baidee, Chabadabada

Savannakhet, Pakse and Boloven Plateaux

I am only slightly exaggerating if I say we instantly fell in love with Laos, the country, and the Laos, the people. Upon passing the border at Lao Bao, we entered a different world, an ideally peaceful, relaxed, friendly one. I had high expectations but I've not been disappointed, and Alexis he is absolutely charmed. He's sitting next to me as I am writing this update, and is having an unbelievably tough time selecting the pics that we will post today! (that's partly because there are so many beautiful pics, and partly because the internet connection is pretty bad)
We first stopped at Savannakhet, a blissfully quiet city where all you can do is visit Wats, talk to monks in the oldest monastery in town, exlpore the countryside by bicycle, and enjoy a cold Lao beer with a mix of locals and the odd backpacker. Talking about the latter, we met 3 of them in Savannakhet, and they're quite typical of the backpacker in Laos: a veteran of the country, who's visiting it for the 6th time (Marc et Sophie) or the solo traveller who rents a bike to explore Laos off limits in The Zone during 6 days(thus named by the UN in view of the mortality rate and the rampant Malaria). We're not yet that experienced (neither that off-limits) but we have very muh enjoyed our motorbike trip to the Boloven plateaux and to Wat Phu, ancestor of Angkor Wat. Check out Alexis pics of the numerous waterfalls we stopped at on our way! Tomorrow we're heading off to the far far south, Si Phan Don also known at the Four Thousand Islands... Sounds pretty, does it not? We're hoping to catch a glimpse of the Irrawaddy dolphin there. And if we make it, expect an entire album of dolphins on Picasa!

Hoi An and Hue: shopping, culture and magical surroundings

Hoi An and Hue

Hoi An and Hue brought us 2 activities that our trip was somewhat lacking of so far: shopping(I bought 3 hand-made dresses after swearing for 2 days that I would resist temptation) and a good dose of cultural sightseeing with the Imperial City in Hue and the NGuyen Emperors tombs. Shopping and endless cultural sightseeing may not be Alexis' cup of tea, but he had his share of fun too: indeed Hue gave him the opportunity to finally emulate Top Gear guys, as we hired a motorbike and had loads of fun (and the odd argument) getting lost and narrowly avoiding hundreds of vehicles coming from all directions on busy streets.
We have to say goodbye to Vietnam though, as indeed TET festival is starting on Monday and will paralyse the whole country for about a week while everybody is with their families enjoying this new year celebration. We have thus decided to head off to Laos tomorrow, and since there are no tourist buses anymore ("TET, closed, closed, no buses, no buses"), we will no doubt have a great day on board 3 different local buses crossing the Lao Bao border. We've done something similar to get to Hue and it's been quite the experience! Wish us luck, and we will post another update when we have some good pics from Laos.

South Coast: a vacation from the vacation

Nha Trang Mui Ne

A vacation from your vacation: this is how our guide describes peaceful Mui Ne, not even a village but just really a 13km long beach, unfortunately paved with guesthouses and resorts... It's still a kitesurfer paradise however, take a look at the pics! our favorite spot was the little fishing village at the end of the beach. Nah Trang, our next stop, is a bigger city by the sea. It's definitely got very relaxing vibes, and the vietnamese family who ran our guesthouse were the living proof of it. We had a great time at their place.

Ho Chi Minh City, a motorcycle's paradise

Ho Chi Minh

HCMC, a totally unorganized chaos... But a good way to get you immediately in the hear of things. Our highlight: dinner at a tiny street stall, eating on low plastic chairs from plastic plates, succulent dishes of the finest seafood.

24H in Hong Kong

ALBUM Hong Kong

Our first stop is in Hong Kong, where we arrive after an 11 hours flight. I watched 3 movies and read 2 books to pass time while Alexis slept most of the way: so far, everything is just as usual!
Our first stop is HK, and it's a luxury one as Yann and Peggy kindly invited us to stay at their place. We meet their daughter Anna and catch-up over a bottle of champagne. The next day sees us rushing to Maxims for a lunch of dim sum and then checking in for Ho Chi Minh, from where I am posting this update today. Check out HK album above!

Leaving do - 09/01 at The Local

Our leaving do number 2 takes us to our favourite local, the Duke of Clarence on Old Brompton Road. A big thank you to everyone who joined us that evening, no matter the distance (Karine), the upcoming event (Fred: 26 jan!!!) or the violence endured in the days before (Nico and Boutet, mugged and robbed respectively).
A special thanks to those of you who staid late and were brave enough to drink a Flaming Ferrari at Nam Long bar, and to Damien whose endless orders at the bar kept the party going, We even heard that some survived the infamous FF: congrats Helene!

Leaving do - 08/01 at Mason's Arms

The Coolest Office (we actually did win this award in a very serious, European competition in Holland in case anyone is wondering...), a.k.a SSI London, treated me to a speech, presents, and many pints of ales at the pub! A big thanks to them all.
PS to SSI London: of course, my kicking the Jenga off the table was all part of a well rehearsed plan, and not yet another proof of my clumsiness as some would say behind my back...
